HomeODP Player Development Approach

ODP Player Development Approach

Our technical staff and leadership have been diligently analyzing and studying game models from various countries to enhance and elevate our program. The goal is to create a developmental structure that not only complements but significantly improves our players’ growth.

One model that has stood out is the Dutch system, renowned for its long-standing emphasis on developing players from youth through to the first team.

Our Technical Director had the opportunity to visit and study the methodologies used by Dutch clubs including Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, AZ Alkmaar, and Feyenoord. These clubs share a consistent philosophy centered around. iD – Individual Development – a concept now also being applied to the rapidly growing women’s game in the Netherlands.

What is iD (Individual Development)?

In the context of soccer, iD means tailoring development to each player’s unique needs. It supports growth both on and off the field, focusing on:

-Personal qualities: confidence, discipline, focus, and responsibility
-Social skills: communication, leadership, teamwork, and respect
-Soccer abilities: technical proficiency, tactical understanding, physical fitness, and decision-making

Individual development recognizes that no two players are the same. By providing personalized support, it helps each player improve holistically — as an athlete, teammate, and individual.

Among all the Dutch clubs visited, PSV Eindhoven’s Individual Development Model closely aligns with the values and vision of ODP. This model emphasizes a well-rounded approach to youth player growth.

Individual Development Model for Youth Soccer

Personal Development

Builds a strong mental and physical foundation:

  • Self-awareness
  • Mental resilience
  • Goal-setting
  • Healthy lifestyle habits

Social Development

Promotes strong interpersonal and leadership skills:

  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • Leadership
  • Respect and sportsmanship

Vocational (Soccer Skill) Development

Develops technical and tactical proficiency:

  • Technical skills (dribbling, passing, shooting)
  • Tactical understanding
  • Physical conditioning
  • Smart decision-making
  • Continuous learning mindset

Training Method: Carousel Training

A key element in Dutch youth development is the use of carousel training, widely adopted by top academies including PSV Eindhoven .

Carousel training is a ‘rotation-based method’ where players move through multiple stations, each focused on a specific skill or tactical scenario. This structure ensures high engagement and simulates match-like intensity.

Key Benefits for Youth Players:

  • Increased touches on the ball
  • Continuous movement and involvement
  • Exposure to varied situations within one session
  • Efficient use of training time and space
  • Easily adaptable for different ages and skill levels

This dynamic, holistic, and player-centered approach aligns with ODP’s mission to develop well-rounded athletes prepared for the next level of the game.
