The second week of camp concluded with our kids and
counselors using up every last minute to work on techniques
and having a little bit of fun. Judging by the pictures,
it’s easy to tell that both camp sessions this
year were a blast. Thanks to all the campers, coaches
and parents who made this possible.

The World Cup belongs in Philly. YOU can make
that happen!
Great news! Philadelphia is climbing the chart for
the online petition to bring the FIFA World Cup to the

nearly 10,000 signatures since early July and we are
now in sixth place among 18 U.S. cities also fighting

Help Save

Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Teams-Up
with KICKS Against Breast Cancer
Click

On
April 17, 2010, the 14th Annual KICKS Against Breast
Cancer (KABC) Women's Collegiate Soccer Tournament was
held at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, MD. This
day of college soccer provided coaches and players with
an opportunity to play competitive soccer matches while
making a difference in the lives of people affected
by breast cancer. Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer’s
’93 and ’94 girls ODP teams combined to
participate.
The Kicks Against Breast Cancer Tournament was founded
in 1996, when KABC founder Louise Waxler’s dear
friend, Claudia Mayer, lost her battle with cancer.
Since then, girls’ teams have been invited to
compete annually against top collegiate soccer teams
throughout the United States. Four teams played in the
first tournament in 1997. This year saw 14 teams competing.
The teams are also challenged to raise funds to support
Howard County General Hospital’s Claudia Mayer
Cancer Resource Center: a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine
in Columbia, MD, the Claudia Mayer Breast Cancer Foundation
and the Charlotte Moran Foundation for Women's Soccer,
all 501c3 non-profit organizations supporting individual’s
affected by cancer.
For Waxler, associate general manager and director
of operations for the Philadelphia Independence, KICKS
is a labor of love. “Cancer does not discriminate,”
said Waxler. “I have been involved in soccer since
1985 and it was the perfect vehicle for me to make a
difference in the fight against breast cancer. Those
who participate don’t just come to play. They
hear testimonials from cancer survivors and learn how
to be more aware. That is what Claudia would have wanted.”
Since the inception of the Women's KABC tournament,
donations and fundraising by participating teams and
donors have totaled more than $800,000. Last year’s
event raised an amazing $100,000!
For Waxler, it’s not necessarily about the amount
of money raised; any dollar amount makes a difference.
Her real hope is that the young women who come and play
in the tournament walk away with not only a victory
but also a new awareness and optimism that something
can be done about breast cancer if we all give just
a little of ourselves.
For information on how you can get involved in KABC,
contact Louise Waxler at louise.waxler@kicksagainstbreastcancer.org. |

WORKSHOP AND AGM WEEKEND
BRINGS SOCCER COMMUNITY TOGETHER
The
annual Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Workshop held
this past Saturday at USTC in Downingtown was one of
the best attended ever. Over 1300 people attended this
years event which featured excellent training sessions
from the Olympic Development Program staff. A highlight
was the on field demonstration run by the Philadelphia
Independence. Coach Paul Riley and his players provided
a great session followed by autographs. Joining many
of the coaches and administrators were plenty of our
players. Kids of all ages enjoyed games and prizes as
well as getting to meet the Independence players.
The Annual General Meeting was held this past Sunday
in Valley Forge. The AGM is the yearly business meeting
for Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer. Delegates from
all affiliates gathered to hear the state of the organization,
present and future, from President Bob Mc Dade. Chief
Executive Officer, Chris Branscome addressed the delegates
for the first time since taking the position last September.
Elections were held for three executive board positions.
Two new members were elected, Peter Dicce as Secretary
and Herb Maguire as Treasurer. Registrar Donna Outt
remains as Registrar. All ran unopposed. President,
Bob McDade thanked outgoing board members Kim Di Fiore
and Ned Levy for their service.
Also on the agenda, the delegates accepted the annual
budget and fee/fine schedule as proposed by the Board
of Directors. They also adopted changes to the Constitution
and by-laws addressing the elimination of the Executive
Vice President position, removing the vote of the Past-president
and establishing the responsibilities of the Chief Executive
Officer. |
