Soccer Community Helps Support U.S. Troops Serving in Afghanistan

The York USA Soccer League voted at their December League Meeting to donate $500 to purchase supplies and some “comforts from home” to send to U.S. troops serving in Afghanistan. The suggestion came from Board member Al Chesnavage.  Al's son, Timothy, is a Marine  currently serving at Camp Leatherneck in Southern Afghanistan.

York USA Soccer voted to make this an annual event, and Timothy’s unit was selected as the first to receive these supplies. Supplies include:

  • -Sanitary Wipes
-Wool socks
-Gloves
-Heating elements (the ones the hunters use when they are out in the cold)
-Sports magazines
-Local newspapers
-Snacks, such as cookies (home-made and Girl Scout are favorites) -Candy
-Fruit Roll-Ups

These supplies are quickly shared by all in the unit and are also gievn to the local children in the villages that surround the camp.  The suppilies are greatly appreciated, especially this Holiday Season when these young men and women are way from their families, wives, girlfriends and friends.
