ODP East Region Championship: U16 Boys' (2002) Enthusiasm, Will Drives Victory
Eastern Pennsylvania 3, New Jersey 0
Coming into the ODP East Region semifinals, Eastern Pennsylvania U16 Boys coach Tom Dodds said, "One thing is certain: the work rate will be at a high level from us (this weekend)."
He wasn't wrong. In the semifinals against Virginia (a team they lost to in the finals a year ago), they equalized late in the second half, before winning in extra time, 2-1. In the finals against New Jersey on Sunday, they had chance after chance in the first half, only to keep coming up short. The floodgates finally opened up in the second half.
"I thought it was going to come anytime during the game," said Nyles Cayemitte. "I just thought we had so much enthusiasm and will to go get those three goals."
Cayemitte got the scoring started soon after the break with a smart finish in the side netting. Then Jonathan Larbi, with Cayemitte taking his defender away from the middle of the field, broke through the defense on a solo run to make it 2-0. Andrew Kulynin pounced on a corner kick in the box to complete the scoring.
That allowed coach Dodds to empty his bench. Everyone played, including both keepers. Everyone contributed.
"It feels like we have a really well-rounded team," said Cayemitte. "Everyone is committed and built well into the team. Everyone has a part to play."
"(It's a) great group," said Dodds. "You knew the intensity and the effort would be there. And they put it out there. All the way."
Nyle Cayemitte opened the scoring early in the second half and Eastern Pennsylvania ran away with things from there.
High-fives and hugs for the U16 Boys at the final whistle. Kaled Ivanov (10) was particularly grateful Jonathan Larbi found the back of the net.
