State Youth Referee Administrator: Jeff Tener
Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer President Jim Kuntz and the Board of Directors have appointed Jeff Tener to the position of State Youth Referee Administrator (SYRA). The SYRA is responsible for various aspects of the association’s referee programming, in coordination with the U.S. Soccer Referee Program and the Eastern Pennsylvania State Referee Committee. The SYRA serves on the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Board of Directors.
As SYRA, Tener will focus on maintaining a strong pool of referees, recruiting both youths and adults and establishing an environment for them to succeed. He will play a key role in selecting referees for state-wide and regional competitions including the National Championship Series.
Additionally, Tener will emphasize strong mentor programs, which target specific areas of improvement.
Tener will also focus on developing Grade 9 courses aimed at small-sided games. This will give more officials on-field experience before they become Grade 8, full-sided games, referees.
Tener will work closely with Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Technical Director Mike Barr and Director of Soccer Development & Performance Gary Stephenson to improve relationships between the coaching community and referees as well.
A Grade 8 referee and referee assignor, Tener brings a wide variety of experience to the SYRA position. He currently assigns about 300 games per year for travel leagues and tournaments. He serves as the 3rd Vice President of the Inter-County Soccer League and as the Referee Director for Hulmeville Soccer Club Intramural Program. He developed referee mentorship programs for both entities and provides refresher training for Hulmeville’s intramural officials. Additionally, Tener holds a U.S. Soccer National E Coaching License.
“Referees are as important to the game as players and coaches,” Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer CEO Chris Branscome. “Jeff has been working at the grassroots for years and knows firsthand what we need to energize our program and provide support and advocacy for the referee community.”
