Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer will celebrate the 2018 year in soccer at the Annual Awards Banquet on Friday, February 22, 2019. In anticipation of the event, which will take place at the Sheraton Valley Forge, we'll profile honorees each day leading into the Awards Banquet. Today: Excellence in Coaching recipients George O'Neill and Jenifer Tomlinson.

2018 Excellence in Coaching Award: George O'Neill

  • Port Glasgow, Scotland, native joined the Philadelphia Atoms in 1973 from St. Mirren FC
     
  • Played four seasons with the Atoms, winning the 1973 NASL title with the team
     
  • Coached at the professional, college and youth levels with stops at the Philadelphia Fever, Philadelphia Fury, Philadelphia Inter, the University of Pennsylvania and Region I ODP
The story
 

George O’Neill was a key contributor in the midfield to the 1973 Philadelphia Atoms. The Port Glasgow, Scotland, native joined the club in the preseason and played four seasons in Philadelphia. He’s been in the area ever since, coaching Philadelphia Inter Soccer Club, the Philadelphia Fever of the Major Indoor Soccer League, the University of Pennsylvania and with the Olympic Development Program at the state and regional level. O’Neill also served as an assistant coach for the professional Philadelphia Fury.

The story

Jenifer Tomlinson has enjoyed a distinguished coaching career at all levels of soccer, from recreation and intramural to high end club to high school and college. Her stops have included Muhlenberg College (assistant), Drexel University, Warrington Soccer Club, Horsham Soccer Club and the Philadelphia Ukrainian Nationals. At her high school alma mater, Springfield Township, Tomlinson grew the program from an 0-20 opening season to qualify for the state tournament twice in her tenure. She’s been an Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer staff coach since 2000, working summer camps in addition to ODP. Tomlinson holds a National C License.
