To celebrate the 2018 year in soccer, Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer is introducing a new annual award: Team of the Year. The Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Team of the Year Award will go to a club team that succeeded at the state, regional and/or national level, while positively representing the state association on and off the field.

Congratulations to the four candidates: Keystone FC Premier 03 (2003 girls), Philadelphia Soccer Club Coppa Swarm (2004 girls), Philadelphia Ukrainian Nationals Black (2005 boys), Vereinigung Erzgebirge Green Gunners (2002 boys).

We'll profile each team before announcing the inaugural Team of the Year Award winner on Tuesday, December 11. The winner will be recognized at the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Annual Awards Banquet on Friday, February 22, at the Sheraton Valley Forge.

The story

Vereinigung Erzgebirge Green Gunners had an interesting run in the Presidents Cup in 2017. They finished second in the Eastern Pennsylvania Presidents Cup, rolled through the regional championship then came up short in the US Youth Soccer Presidents Cup. In 2018, with redemption on their minds, the Green Gunners won all three competitions, becoming the first VE youth club to win a national championship. Sean McCartney scored the game-winning goal in the final as the Green Gunners defeated Heat FC (Nevada), 2-1, in Westfield, Indiana.

They said it

"Well, last year we didn't have too much success at nationals. It drove us to win this year. It's indescribable, just an exhilarating feeling of relief." - Sean McCartney, midfielder, VE Green Gunners.

Of note

The VE Green Gunners spread out this fall with 10 high schools in Bucks and Montgomery counties represented on the team. The players often found themselves on opposing sidelines throughout the scholastic season. Additionally, 11 VE players are youth soccer referees, while all volunteer at club events such as the VE Soccer Academy camps and the VE Summer Splash Tournament.
