2018 US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup Preview

Presidents Cup Teams

The 2018 US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup kick off Thursday, July 12, in Westfield, Indiana, and conclude Sunday, July 15. Seven Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer teams, representing six clubs, qualified for the competition by winning the US Youth Soccer Eastern Presidents Cup in June. Below, we outline how all seven teams clinched theirs spots in Indiana.

U13 Boys: Southern Chester County SA Dragons

  • The Dragons went 5-0 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Presidents Cup, outscoring opponents 17-2 in the process
  • At regionals, SCCSA had a similar run. They scored 25 goals, giving up 0, through the semifinals but needed a 1-0 win over Thunder PSG (MD) to clinch a spot in nationals. They defeated FCUSA Philadelphia by the same score in the state final
  • Southern Chester County Soccer Association, with a team known as Chesco Premier, won the state association’s first national Presidents Cup back in 2008. Ten years on, the Kennett based club will look to add a second

U14 Girls: PA Rush

  • PA Rush gave up just one goal in finishing second in the state Presidents Cup. They lost the final in penalty kicks to Keystone FC but advanced to the regionals as a wildcard
  • The stout defense continued in regionals: Rush conceded just one goal and won the region with back-to-back clean sheets in the semifinals and finals
  • PA Rush will be looking for the club’s first national championship in US Youth Soccer cup play

U15 Girls: Harleysville FC Ready

  • Harleysville was one of the rare state Presidents Cup champions to win three knockout stage games, and it wasn’t easy. They reached the finals off back-to-back 3-1 results before defeating Warrington Fusion, 3-2, to clinch a spot in regionals
  • Rianne Moll finished as the age group’s top scorer in regionals with nine goals to her name. That was a theme of Harleysville: they scored 18 in five games
  •  Harleysville reached the National Presidents Cup a year ago. They'll be looking to improve on their fourth place finish

U16 Boys: Vereinigung Erzgebirge (VE) Green Gunners

  • VE outscored opponents 13-2 to win the state Presidents Cup after finishing runner-up a year ago
  • The Green Gunners had the difficult task of winning a rematch to clinch a spot in nationals. They held off HMMS, the team they met in the state final, 3-1 to win a second consecutive regional Presidents Cup title
  • A year ago, VE opened with a tie at the national Presidents Cup, before dropping their next two games. They’ll look to improve on that finish in 2018

U16 Girls: Montgomery United

  • MontU went 5-0 in winning the state Presidents Cup, with three wins coming in the knockout stage
  • Balanced offense defined Montgomery United’s run to the regional title. Four players finished with at least two goals in the tournament: Kloey Carminati (3), Nikki Foller-Moll (2), Leighann Kafel (2) and Kathryn Rimmer (2)
  • This U16 girls team is MonU’s first regional champion of any kind since 2014 (MonU Arsenal, Presidents Cup). They’ll have a tough opening game, as Indiana state champion Indy Premier SC Elite Victory awaits with a home field advantage

U17 Girls: Rage United Comets

  • The Comets reached regionals thanks to a second place finish in the state Presidents Cup, a hard-fought 3-2 defeat in penalty kicks to Montgomery United Bombers
  • Rage United actually lost twice to the Bombers in state play. It was a different story at regionals. Both teams reached the finals, where Rage United won 3-2
  • The opening game of nationals will pose quite the matchup of hometowns: Lancaster vs. Chicago (Chicago Rush Select)

U18 Girls: Vereinigung Erzgebirge (VE) United

  • The second VE team to make it to nationals, the U18 girls won the state Presidents Cup by outscoring opponents, 20-2
  • VE had the top scorer in the age group at regionals. Caroline Weir had six goals. VE faced state Presidents Cup finalist Waynesboro in the final, winning 3-2
  • Green White SC of Illinois will be VE’s first opponent at nationals
