Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer To Host Grassroots Coaching Meeting
Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Technical Director Mike Barr and Director of Soccer Development & Performance Gary Stephenson and U.S. Soccer Director of Coaching Administration Frank Tschan will host a meeting for Technical Directors focused on the U.S. Soccer Grassroots Coaching Licenses on Thursday, January 18 at the 2018 United Soccer Coaches Convention.
The meeting, held at 4:00 P.M. in room 109B, will revolve around the changes coming to U.S. Soccer Coaching Education, specifically to the licensing structure.
In December, U.S. Soccer announced eight (8) new grassroots level coaching courses to be introduced in early 2018. These courses will be focused empowering coaches through experiential learning and a player-centered approach. The course options will relate directly to small-sided games and the respective age-groups outlined in the Player Development Initiatives.
Tschan, a key figure in reestablishing the federation’s grassroots coaching efforts, will discuss the changes and answer any questions coaches may have. A coach at the youth, high school, college and semi-professional levels, Tschan spent time in Germany prior to joining U.S. Soccer. He was the Director of Sports and Physical Education at the International School in Dusseldorf, Germany and served as the International Relations Coordinator in the United Soccer Coaches--then the NSCAA--DFB (German Football Association) partnership. Tschan witnessed first hand Germany's youth development efforts that eventually led to the nation's victory at the 2014 World Cup.
Barr has also been involved in the new licensing structure and has worked closely with Tschan. He has run pilot courses for select clubs in the state and has submitted feedback to U.S. Soccer.
“This meeting is a great opportunity for all of us to learn more about the new Grassroots Licensing structure,” said Barr. “We believe it’s an important step in developing better coaches and better players in the future, and we want to make sure as many coaches as possible understand the changes before they are implemented. Frank has been a tremendous resource. We look forward to having him speak.”
Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer previously featured Frank Tschan in an issue of the Evolving Game: Constructing New Education Plans at the Grassroots Level.
JUST ADDED: In addition to discussions on U.S. Soccer, Andrea Ratti of Inter Milan will make a presentation on the topic of player development inside one of the most famous clubs in the world. Ratti is the Technical Coach of the Inter Academy Project around the world.
